A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte By Georges Seurat
(Un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte – 1884-6)
About 7 by 10 feet, it took about two years to finish. The painting format was oil on canvas, but with similar-sized painted dots instead of brush strokes. The format was called divisionism at the time but is now known as pointillism. La Grande Jatte is on the outskirts of Paris, France. It is located at the Art Institute of Chicago and was featured in the 1986 film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
