Hoosick Valley (From The Window) By Grandma Moses

Hoosick Valley by famed folk artist Grandma Moses was painted in 1946. Moses is best-known for treating her paint as if were yarn, as she was an avid sewer in the early years of her life. This particular painting was created to give the sense of an embroidery piece.

In Hoosick Valley (From the Window), varied tones of green and yellow are set next to one another to evoke the interplay between parched meadows and verdant hills. It almost a more impressionistic feel rather than folk art style.

Certain details in her work were deliberately executed in raised paint in order to set them off from the background. Many of Moses’ paintings, when viewed up close, are actually composites of abstract forms all blended together to form the completed piece.
