American Gothic by Grant Wood

American Gothic is a 1930 painting by Grant Wood. Profiled are Dr. Byron McKeeby (a dentist) and the artist’s sister, Nan Wood Graham. The house in the background is the Dibble House, located in Eldon, Iowa. Wood had a sketch of the house to start the painting, and later received a photograph to complete it.
AmericanGothic01The picture was explained to illustrate a man (farmer) and his daughter, mainly because Nan was about half of the age of the dentist. The painting was entered in a contest at the Art Institute of Chicago, and won third place and $300. It is still there.
