Charles Dickens Born February 7, 1812 Charles John Hoffman Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England.  He was the son of a naval clerk and his wife and he was the second of eight children not all of whom survived. Dickens’s Father changed his place of employment more than once, though he
